Wildfires are a severe threat across Europe, causing significant environmental and economic damage. Scientists assume that wildfires will become more intense and widespread as a result of climate change, particular forestry practices and ecosystem deterioration.
The European project TREEADS aims to increase environmental sustainability and urban/rural ecosystems safety. This will be achieved by redefining forest protection and management through the development and validation of an innovative, sustainable, and applied holistic approach to wildfire management. 47 scientific institutions from all over Europe participate in TREEADS. The project, which is scheduled to run for 3.5 years, is being funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 program with 23 million euros.
From Germany, amongst others, the “Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und –prüfung (BAM), the university “Otto-von-Guericke” in Magdeburg and Schmitz One Seven GmbH support the TREEADS project with their expertise. One Seven shall be responsible for the development and practical research of extinguishing agents and extinguishing methods to fight wildfires quickly and effectively, thus reducing damage to the environment and the population as far as possible.
